Common Questions and Answers
What is it like to have a birth photographer?
I try to be as quiet as possible, you will know I am there but i will be in the background. I quietly document the moments and emotions that come along with one of the biggest moments in peoples lives. When someone meets their baby, their emotions are written all over their faces, that’s what I am there to capture, that's the moment that I love to capture.
How many images can I expect?
I deliver between 50-150 professionally edited images. The exact number depends on the package you choose, as well as the unique length and unfolding of your story.
How long do you stay?
I stay between 1-2 hours postpartum. I like to take pictures of the newborn exam as well as your first experiences breastfeeding. If you are interested in further coverage (arrival of siblings, grandparents, etc...we can add that to your package).
The positives of having a birth photographer?
The birth of a baby, however it comes safely into the world is a blur. It’s so easy to forget those feelings. Having someone record those moments gives parents the opportunity to just ‘be’ in the moment. Then there is a record for years to come of the moment you meet your baby. It doesn’t get better than that.
Why should I hire a Birth Photographer?
Birth is a whirlwind: a wonderful and intense whirlwind. Many mothers find that after giving birth, they only have a few memories of the experience. Birth photography allows mothers to see and remember all the big and small moments of their journey. The pride, the tenderness, the intensity, the beauty, the love, the strength all those first moments when you finally meet your baby. A birth is a day you will remember for the rest of your life having a professional birth photographs can help keep memories safe.
Many clients cry when they view their images for the first time. There is something so powerful about reliving your birth experience.
Does any birth space NOT allow birth photography?
I have photographed births and ive never had an issue photographing at any hospital, birth center, or homebirth practice. Some hospitals will now allow me to photograph c-sections.
Do you work with a partner?
Not currently but this is something im hoping to have soon.
When do you arrive?
I like to arrive when my clients are in active labor. If your care provider is doing cervical checks - we usually like to be with you from 6 centimeters onward. If you are not being checked, I come when you have an active pattern of contractions that you can't talk or walk through.
I will be in communication before and during your labor to ensure that I come at just the right time.
What happens if you miss the birth?
Birth can be unpredictable! I make every effort to arrive with enough time to capture your labor, birth, and first hours together. In the event of a truly precipitous labor, we still aim to tell your story (in this case...your story was a fast, unpredictable birth!) I'll stay as long as I need to get the same amount of images you would have received if you had a longer labor and I offer a fresh 48 session.
